Amber lyn mitchell tulsa9/14/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() They feel like they accomplished some things last year but want to go out and see if they can accomplish something this year. And two, they recognize, and I have told them, that what occurred in the past remains in the past and it is time to move on. One, our team has a little more confidence today than they have had in the past. (On carrying over last season's success): "I think it is two-fold. Right now, our biggest concern is in our offensive line development, not our quarterback development." I am not expecting them to go out and be perfect at the start. I would hope that by midseason we are pretty productive on the offensive line. You can only watch so much film and learn assignments, they have to go out there and work with one another. Those guys have to work with one another and some of that only comes with experience. (On the offensive line's cohesion): "I think with the exception of the quarterback position, the longest term of development is in the offensive line. With the young players we have at the position, we may be able to do something like that with him." He has had some big catches for us, including the 50-plus yard catch and run in the Rose Bowl. We may take him and involve him a little bit, perhaps, at an H-back position, because we like his ability to catch the football. Sedrick Brown is down in weight and looks the best he has looked here. We have some very talented young running backs, but I think that Montrell (Lowe) is going to have something to say about that. I think we have five running backs that can play. (On depth at running back): "The best we had been at running back prior to this year was our first season (1997) when we had both (Edwin) Watson and Kendall Matthews. After just two days of practice, which is not near enough time, I would suggest that we might have four, five or six that could play this year." I think we are recruiting better players and it manifests itself in terms of them getting onto the field. The previous most was two and we have averaged one or two a year. (On the freshman class): "Last season, we played five of the freshmen, which was the most ever. If we could take another step up the ladder there, it would certainly help our football team, especially in the early stages of the season." "The biggest change in our football team last year, in my opinion, was not anything we did offensively, but rather defensively, in that our previous high ranking was seventh in the league and last year we finished third. I thought we were going to go back and look a little bit like we did in 1997, but I think we are going to look more like 1998 when Drew Brees was our starting quarterback for the first time, meaning we will run 70 to 75 percent of the offense. It is kind of fun and recharges your batteries to think that we have to change some things and `tweak' it a little bit. We do expect to have a good football team. Our expectation level continues to change at Purdue. (Opening Remarks): "As we start this season we are anxious to get going and see what our football team has to offer and what we are all about. ![]()
